1790-1840 CENSUS AGE CATEGORIES (except for 1790, pertaining here to "free white males and females").

1790: (1) free white males 16 and over, (2) free white males under 16, (3) free white females, (4) all other free persons, (5) slaves.

1800 and 1810 (males and females): (1) under 10, (2) 10 and under 16, (3) 16 and under 26, (4) 26 and under 45, (5) 45 and over.

1820 (males and females): (1) under 10, (2) 10 and under 16, (3) 16 and under 26, (4) 16 to 18 (males only),* (5) 26 and under 45, (6) 45 and over. *The extra category was for males, to determine the total manpower that could be called up in times of war. Besides confusing people interested in their ancestors, this category apparently confused census takers, resulting in many reports of (3) and (4) that are suspect.

1830-1840 (males and females): (1) under 5, (2) 5 and under 10, (3) 10 and under 15, (4) 15 and under 20, (5) 20 and under 30, (6) 30 and under 40, (7) 40 and under 50 (8) 50 and under 60 (9) 60 and under 70, (10) 70 and under 80, (11) 80 and under 90, (12) 90 and under 100, and (13) 100 and over.

The 1910 Miracode census is an index of the 1910 United States Federal Census, and is a modified version of the Soundex system. It is only available (2001) for the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. The Miracode census index is available online for some, but not all (as of 2001), of these states from Ancestry.com.

As reported in the early histories of Venango County, Pennsylvania: Bell (1890), p. 724 and Babcock (1919), p. 874. I have not seen documents supporting this statement. These early histories do not give sources. I can only speculate on who might have furnished information on the Fleming family of Oil Creek. A guess would be that Samuel L. Fleming (#26) provided the information for both Bell and Babcock.

. Sharon Boggie, Parker, Colorado, told me of Sarah’s maiden name when passing through Edmonton in July 1997. She had been informed of the name by David Weber of Pleasantville, Pennsylvania, who found the information in Jordan. I had suggested in Clifford (1985), p. 46, that Sarah’s maiden name might be Reed, based on her son Daniel naming one of his sons James Reed Fleming.

Ann McClintock’s dates, 1785-1880, have been reported in several manuscripts that I have seen on the early McClintocks. I believe all these reports can be traced to an undated McClintock manuscripts by Arden and his brother Gerald McClintock. Their records were apparently from records in family bibles and from contributions by other workers. See “References” for more information on this manuscript.

The birth and death dates of Samuel, the birth date of Jane, and the names and dates of their children were from a list of Fleming dates and names kept in a special box, including also clippings, by my Fleming grandparents, William and Josephine (Lytle) Fleming. The list (I will call it “Fleming Family Records”) was probably started by my great grandparents, John S. (#27) and Hannah (Jamison) Fleming. I do not know who now has possession of this list. I feel these records, which I copied in the early 1960s, are equivalent to family bible records. The dates and names are the same as those reported amongst the much larger number of dates and names in the “Heald Manuscript.”

In one of the LDS Family History Library’s films of the 1850 census for Venango County (LDS film 444800) a page is apparently filmed out of order. Dwelling 854, Family 884 of Allegheny Township begins, as it should, with Samuel Fleming, age 64 (sic), farmer, with $3000 real estate. His name is at the bottom of the page. The next page (p. 204) continues with Betsy Byles and her children, giving the appearance that Samuel is living with Betsy Byles and her family. One must search further on the film to find the remainder of Samuel’s family, starting with Jane (giving the appearance she is head of household), but there is no dwelling-family numbers. Further search would find a Mr. Byles and the Byles’ dwelling-family numbers.

Venango County Deed Book 1, p. 418, 27 November 1840 (FHL film 864539). “By Treasurer” means Edward probably had not paid his taxes, and when the taxes were paid, he received title to his land again. Another special-case Grantor is “by Sheriff," which did not pertain to Edward. “By Sheriff” indicates that someone is foreclosing by going to a judge; usually the person is owed money, and the sheriff is unable to collect from the grantor. For this case, a court order is usually needed.

In the 1830 federal census index for Missouri, no Ezekiel Flemings are listed. For the 1830 census index for Ohio, there is one Ezekiel Fleming: Ezekiel Fleming, Jeffers (?Jefferson) Township, Preble County. The census page lists him as “of thirty and under forty,” with a female also of 30 and under 40, and two children, one a male of 5-10, and one a female of 5-10. No Ezekiel Fleming was listed in the 1840 and 1850 censuses for Ohio. Fleming marriage records, from various sources, and sold on compact disk, show that this Ezekiel Fleming married 6 January 1820 Margaret McCastin in Preble County, Ohio. The Preble County Ezekiel initially looked promising, however the Preble County marriage records listed at least 26 Fleming marriages in Preble County Ohio, between 1819 and 1840. Apparently this Ezekiel Fleming was from Kentucky, born circa 1800 in Kentucky. In 1830, he and family were still in Preble County Ohio. In 1850 the family was enumerated in District 52, Huntington County, Indiana (dwelling 761, family 761); this census reported Ezekiel born in Kentucky. Two other early Ezekiel Flemings were listed in federal censuses. One was Ezekiel Fleming, 1860, Clinton County, Dunstable Township, Pennsylvania, no family, born circa 1839, in Pennsylvania (1860 federal census for Dunstable Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania, dwelling 51, family 51). The other was Ezekiel Fleming, 1850, Johnson County, Perry Township, Arkansas, born circa 1826 in Virginia, living in Samuel Leonard’s (dwelling 67, family 69) household. The only other Ezekiel Fleming enumerated in 1840 and 1850 who might have been pertinent was Hezekiah Fleming in the 1840 federal census (Canandaigua Township, Ontario County, New York, #031) and 1850 (#220). I have not seen the 1840 and 1850 census pages for this Hezekiah Fleming.

The Parshall family is mentioned in Newton (1879), p. 622; Schenck (1887), p. 458; and a GenServ report (visited May 1999, database ROBQ7GA) of Dave Robison (Concord, California). According to Schenck (1887), Samuel Parshall was a child of Samuel and Elizabeth Goutcher Parshall. The Parshalls were from Massachusetts. Samuel [Sr.] (died 1839 according to Schenck or 1827, in Ellsworth, Ohio, according to Dave Robison’s GenServ report) moved to Trumbull County, Ohio, where he married in 1806 Elizabeth Goutcher (1783-1865) (Goucher according to Dave Robison’s GenServ report), then to Erie County, Pennsylvania, to present-day Forest County, Pennsylvania, to Deerfield Township, Warren County, Pennsylvania. The account in Schenck (1887) has Samuel Parshall, Jr., marrying Lucy Henderson, but Schenck does not mention Samuel Parshall’s first wife, Zibiah Fleming; whereas Newton (1879), p. 622, has Samuel marrying in 1843 “a daughter of Andrew Fleming, deceased. ” In addition to Samuel (Jr.), other children of Samuel (Sr.) and Elizabeth (Goutcher) Parshall were John P. Parshall, born 1809, married Elsie McGuire (lived in Crawford County, Pennsylvania); Eliza Parshall, born 1812, married Robert Henry (lived in the Tidioute area, Warren County Pennsylvania); Nancy Parshall, born 1817, married Joseph Richardson (lived in Mercer County, Pennsylvania); Jennette Parshall, born 1822, married James Kinnear (lived in the Tidioute area; his biography is on p. lv of Schenck, 1887; he was a founder of a Tidioute bank); and James Parshall, married Henrietta Shugert (lived in Titusville). According to Warren County, Pennsylvania, Cemetery Records, 1750-1935 (FHL film 895183), Henrietta was born 1839; died 1881; married [—?—]; buried in the Shugert-Rogers Lot in the New Tidioute Cemetery, Deerfield Township, Warren County. Her will is in Crawford County Will Book E., p. 504, written 2 October 1881, recorded 1 March 1882; mentioned in the will are son Samuel H. Parshall and daughter Maude Parshall. On p. 91 of Giddens (1948) there is a picture of the Parshall House in Titusville, “built by the wealthy James Parshall,” opened in 1870. Could this James be the husband of Henrietta Shugert? George Stranahan Parshall, another son of Samuel and Elizabeth Parshall, was not mentioned in Newton (1879), and Schenck (1887).

1860 federal census for Allegheny Township, dwelling 328, family 318, page 423. I have 20 and 21 April 1998 emails from Robert Wedding), whose ancestors were Thomas and Ellen Stevenson. The maiden name of Ellen was McIntyre, Ellen being a daughter of Samuel (born circa 1800 in Pennsylvania) and Sarah (Watson?) McIntyre of Allegheny Township. Sarah was born circa 1800, died 4 October 1852. (She would be the “Sarah, wife of Samuel McIntire, died 4 October 1852, 49y 10m 11d,” buried in Miller Farm Cemetery, Oil Creek Township, Venango County.) Robert Wedding had conjectured that Alice, wife of Andrew Fleming, was also a daughter of Samuel and Sarah McIntyre, in part because in the 1840 census Samuel had a daughter who would have been circa 10-15 years of age and can not be accounted for. Robert Wedding reported that all of the other children of Samuel and Sarah McIntyre are known from Allegheny Township censuses, e. g. 1850, dwelling 806, family 835. The other children were Ellen McIntyre (Stevenson), born 1832, died 8 February 1869; Elizabeth Jane McIntyre, born 1835, died 15 September 1914; Watson McIntyre, born 1838; Rachel May McIntyre, born 1840; and Araminta McIntyre, born 1842.

If Elizabeth McClintock was her married name, one candidate would be Elizabeth Davidson, daughter of Moses and Ann (McClintock) Davidson. This Elizabeth Davidson, born circa 1836-1837, married a Joshua McClintock, who I can not place. But Joshua and Elizabeth had three children, and they would probably have been with Elizabeth in 1860, and the Elizabeth McClintock enumerated with the Stevensons was without children at the time.

The Venango County Land and Property Grantor Index, Vol. E-F, 1800-1925 (FHL film 863695), lists a transaction from Andrew Fleming to Sarah A. Shreve, instituted 1850, recorded 1 September 1852, for property in Allegheny Township. There is one transaction from Samuel Shreve to Andrew recorded in Venango County Court House Records, Vol. Y, p. 92, instituted 1850, recorded 20 February 1864, for land in Allegheny Township, part of Tract 61-400. Another transaction has Andrew Fleming selling land to James Shreve, probably he was James Shreve, father of Samuel Shreve (Venango County, Deed Book Q, 1858-1860, p. 588, instituted 8 October 1850, recorded 7 February 1860) (FHL film 864548).

This is from biographical sketches in Elderkin, 1888, pp. 54-55 and Bell (1890). pp. 1087-1089. P. H. Siverly’s father was Abram G. Siverly who came to Venango County from New York City in 1819. He initially settled in present-day Pine Grove Township, and then removed to the Oil City area that became known as Siverly. P. H. and Clarissa Mary (Elderkin) Siverly were the parents of Walter Siverly, born 29 January 1832 in Newton Flat, present-day Forest County. Walter Siverly was a distinguished mathematician, contributing scholarly papers to learned journals in North America and Europe. He was also an active member of the Oil Exchange in Oil City. Walter married Lucy L. Dimond, born 18 November 1841; apparently they did not have children.

An abstract of Samuel Thompson's estate, dated, 1857, in the files of the Warren County Historical Society, indicates Ruth was a daughter of Samuel and his third wife, Electa (Eldred), but if dates are correct Ruth and Martha would be daughters of Samuel's second wife Margaret (Van Alstyne) Thompson. Family World Tree Project (Ancestry.com): "Descendants of John Butterfield and Abigail Morse," contact person: Sherrie Risch, updated 11 November 2004, lists Ruth and Martha as two of nine children of Samuel and Margaret (Van Alstyne) Thompson; one of their sources being William Baker Thompson's "Thompson lineage with mention of allied families," 1911.

This information on the Copelands is from Copeland (1937), spp. 14, 22, 59, 104 (FHL film 896953).

Joseph Adams’s brother was John Adams. One of John’s grandsons was Samuel Adams, Boston politician, Revolutionary War patriot and of Boston Tea Party fame.

There are of course many books on the Adams family. Four that I used were (1) Adams. An American Dynasty, by Francis Russell, published by the American Heritage Publishing Company, Inc., New York, 1976, 385 pages; (2) Diary and autobiography of John Adams, edited by L. H. Butterfield, 4 volumes, Belknap Press of Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1961, 403 pages; (3) The Founding Fathers. John Adams. A biography in his own words, edited by James Bishop Peabody, published by Newsweek, New York, 1973, 416 pages; and (4) The Adams Family, by James Truslow Adams, Literary Guild, New York, 1930, 364 pages.

There was an Alden Copeland, age 28, in the 1850 census Tionesta Township, dwelling 1067, family 1097, page 217. He would have been too old to have been Alden, son of Alden and Rachel. Others in the household were Almira Copeland, age 25, Rhoda Copeland, age 9, [—?—] Copeland, age 7, and William Copeland, age ?. Confusing matters, there was a James A. Copeland, age 28, with Almira, age 28, Rhoda, age 7, Clarissa, age 5, and William, age 1, at dwelling 1043, family 1073, page 216, in Tionesta Township also in 1850. This apparently is a clerical census error.

In part from 1998 family group records of Joyce Taylor (La Luz, New Mexico) and in part from photocopies of birth and death listings in an old Copeland family bible sent to me 3 August 1988 by Joyce Taylor. She credits one of her sources on Copelands as Copeland (1937). I could not find the 1850 federal census listing for Alden and Rachel Copeland; presumably they were in Tionesta Township, then part of Venango County.

There was also a Hamilton Fleming, born circa 1837, of Fairfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. In 1850, this Hamilton Fleming was enumerated in John and Mary Yost’s household in Fairfield Township. John Yost was a cooper born in Germany. Also in this household a Rachel Fleming, born circa 1842 and William Fleming, born circa 1845. Also in Fairfield Township, Crawford County, there were other early Flemings of this apparently German line.

It is difficult to say where this John W. Potter lived at the time. Hamilton’s deed above lists Potter’s address as Deerfield Township, Crawford County [sic]; a deed of John S. Fleming reports John W. Potter from Titusville, Warren County [sic]; and Henry (1873), pp. 497-499, has Potter from Tidioute, Warren County. There is an 1865 deed in Deed Book FF, p. 678, between George W. Binney (possibly the father-in-law of Andrew Fleming) and George (not John) W. Potter of Pleasantville.

In 1870, a Samuel Holmes was enumerated in Allegheny Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania, page 345, as a lawyer, age 47, born in New York, dwelling 157, family 167, living next door to James Solley, born circa 1820, lawyer, with Samuel Solley, age 86, born in Ohio, and Albert Solley, born in New York.
